How to get rid of spiders

Have you ever heard the statistic that there is always a spider within one meter of you at any one time? Whether or not that’s true, the idea is still scary for most people, particularly because Australia is home to the most poisonous spiders in the world.

Sometimes it seems coming across a spider or two is just the way of life in Australia … But it doesn’t have to be!

There are a number of methods you can use to try to eliminate spiders from your home. Just remember, in some situations, you will need to call the professionals.

Why do I need to get rid of spiders?

While most spiders are harmless, there are several species found in Australia that can be quite aggressive and even deadly:

  • Sydney funnel-web spider
  • red-back spider
  • white-tailed spider.

There are also some pretty – and pretty fearsome – spiders that can terrorise your family. Imagine if your child or pet was bitten by a spider.

So, while spiders can be good for the environment by eating pesky insects, it’s best for your family if you don’t have them hanging around.

How can I get rid of spiders?

Try these methods to get rid of the creepy crawlies.

Clean and dust
As with any pest problem, the best method is prevention. Clear your home of general clutter, especially in outside areas close to your home like firewood storage, compost heaps and bins.

Vacuum
Vacuum regularly both on the floor and up behind cupboards and large furniture. This will help remove any webs in and around your home.

Fill in the gaps
Fill any gaps or cracks in and around your home to prevent spiders from entering. (This also goes for cockroaches and other small pests.) And obviously, try to keep windows and doors closed.

Peppermint oil
More than just an old tale, peppermint oil can really work. Mix water with up to 20 drops of peppermint oil and spray your heart away. Not only will the place smell minty fresh, but you’ll also deter those eight-legged creepy crawlies.

This is nuts
Another natural repellent are walnuts! Studies have shown that placing bowls of walnuts around your home will send spiders in the other direction. How bizarre, how bizarre. But worth a try.

Turn off the lights
Spiders prey on small insects and small insects are attracted to bright lights. By turning off outdoor lights, fewer insects will be around and you’ll limit the food supply for the spiders, forcing them elsewhere. Fewer bugs and spiders? Double win!
